Vonnie Louise Powell Campbell, 72, of Content Gap P.A, St. Andrew Jamaica, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2025. Vonnie was born in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica to Mavis and Charlie Black. She has been a resident of Content Gap for the past 48 years.
Vonnie earned her diploma at Saint Joseph’s Teachers College and a Bachelor’s Degree at The Mico University College.
Vonnie was a treasured and exceptional member of the Content Gap P.A All Age Schools community, serving the students she adored for 39 years. She began her career in Springfield in 1971 as a secondary school teacher, providing educational instruction to students in Schools 9, 11 and 12. Sharing her passion for teaching, Vonnie brought inspiration to countless students, her drive and motivation aimed at transmitting not only knowledge but interpersonal skills to her colleagues, students, as well as those outside of the context of an educational institution.
She taught them how to enthusiastically receive the many ways their purpose and calling cultivates their talents, and expands their imagination, for the greater good. Vonnie filled the soul of many, to others she was simply “Ms. Powell.”
Rising to the role of Senior Teacher at the Content Gap All Age School and eventually becoming the beloved Principal, Vonnie left an indelible mark on the entire Content Gap community. Notwithstanding her abdication from the educational system, she never abandoned her love of teaching and imparting knowledge, often rendering community service to neighborhood children in need of educational assistance while supporting the adult community in need of job support services to the like of recommendation letters.
Vonnie fondly known to so many as “Ms. Powell”, “Auntie Sanie”, “teach” “Ms. Campbell” “Mom” “Mommy” and “Yvonne” has been described as a “second parent” by many. Irrespective of what she was called, her compassion, warmth, kindness, and dedication to not only her students and colleagues who availed from her leadership and heart of gold, but also to the parents in the community who sought her guidance and wisdom, that she so effortlessly gave, making those on the receiving end feel seen, respected, heard and an immeasurable part of the school community. It has been said that she was the strength and shoulder for all.
Vonnie will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Gladston W. Campbell, daughter, Rashida Costa (Paul) son, Gladston W. Campbell, Jr.,grandchildren, Antares Costa, Amira Campbell, Eryops Costa, and Ultronia Costa.
Sister to Dian Black, Hyacinth Black, Gerald Black, Aston Black, and Nivel Esson. And other relatives.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, March 29, 2025 at Palm Springs Baptist Church, Palm Springs, Florida. Pastor Jerel A. Olson will officiate.
The family will receive relatives & friends beginning 10:00 AM at the Church.
Burial will take place at Glenwood Memorial Cemetery, Riviera Beach, Florida.
Arrangements are in the care of Tillman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2170 S. Military Trail, West Palm Beach, Florida.
