MORTON E. SHAFRAN, M.D.
What a great loss!
Mort was born to Alexander and Rhoda Shafran in 1927, and almost from childhood he demonstrated a deeply-rooted desire to heal the world, one person at a time. He never faltered in that goal, studying and practicing medicine as well as mentoring others faithfully, until he was 85. If you were lucky enough to be his patient, you felt safe in his devotion, intellect and care. But Mort never stopped at just his patients. Even when he was seriously ill himself, he would hurry to the side of an injured or sick stranger. And he did it all with a shy modesty, downplaying his remarkable skills with a joke or a one-liner.
He was beloved by his wife and family. His first, late wife, Elsa, loved him so. His second wife, Alice, his children and stepchildren, adored him as well, and will miss him terribly. Iris (Ciecko), Robert and Joel, as well as Andrea (Robin) and Adam Priest, his stepchildren, all shared in his love, as did everyone’s spouse.
An only child himself, he was a hero to his eleven grandchildren: Rebecca, Eric, Brendan, Rachel and Daniel, Elyssa and Brandon, Elijah and Emily, his two step-grandchildren, Alyson and Alexandra, and, of course, his three great grandchildren, Sophia, Harper, and Stella. He taught them what they wanted to know, and always with a dollop of mischief.
We are all sad now, but our memories of him are so sublime that we can keep him with joy forever in our hearts.
