Matteo Casamassina, age 90, of Greenacres, Florida, passed away at home on March 19, 2020, surrounded by family. Endearingly known as Matty, he lived life to the fullest, most recently as a dedicated member of the M & M Bowling team, a rising talent at the Elk's Club dances and featured star of River Bridge's community shows. He enjoyed long bike rides each morning, rummikub by the pool and wouldn't pass up the opportunity for karaoke, a glass of red wine or a joke.
Matty was born in Bronx, New York on October 16, 1929, into a large, Italian American family. Growing up in a family with four sisters, he worked hard to forge his own path. He went from being a luncheonette short-order cook to owning a parking lot adjacent to Yankee Stadium to owning Boar's Head and 7-Up routes. On May 4, 1952 he married his beautiful wife Esther (predeceased, 2007); they relocated to the budding enclave of Plainview, New York, and went on to have three children. Besides raising their children and spoiling their grandkids, they spent their years together on their boat Casa's Joy, traveling the US, cooking delicious food and listening to opera.
Matty is survived by his children, Paul (Cathy) Casamassina, Donna (Larry) Shapiro and Carl Casamassina; grandchildren, Matthew Casamassina, Christine Shapiro (Jim Abril), Cory (Hayley) Casamassina, Christopher Shapiro, Troy Casamassina and Joshua Jung; great granddaughter, Skylar Rose Casamassina; and sister, Marie Russo. Along with his estate, he leaves them his infamous eggplant parmesan and stromboli recipes. Matty will also be lovingly remembered by his long time companion and dance partner, Josephine Miano, as well as, many other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
A Memorial Service for Matty will take place at 11:30 AM on Friday, October 16, 2020 at 11:30 AM at Tillman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2170 South Military Trail, West Palm Beach, Florida. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until service time at the funeral home on Friday.
