Carl E Sturges, age 97, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2023. He was born
January 29, 1926 in Yuma Arizona to Derrel and Irma Sturges. He married his wife of 68
years, Anne E Steed on June 20, 1953 at St. Ignatius Church in New York City.
Father of 3, he leaves daughter Carey Fayram and husband Tim, and their two children
David Fayram and Katie Skuratovskiy, his son Carl Sturges and his wife Christie, and their
children Courtney Parton, Carl III, Christopher, and Charlie, his son Mark Sturges and his
wife Gwendolyn, and their children Maxx and Grace. He leaves behind 4 great
grandchildren.
Carl was always busy building or fixing something. His activities included photography, all
forms of sailing, RC airplanes, wood working, camping, skiing, puzzles, working on his
computer, waffle parties, competitive croquet, and a never finished list of projects around
the house. He loved humor, a good rub of his right shoulder, and always had a bright smile
for you. He was supportive of everyone he met, and generous with his time. He loved
spending time with his two generations of grandchildren.
After attending The Art Center School of Photography in Los Angeles, he served in the US
Army 2nd Signal Combat Photo Platoon, filming several atomic bomb tests, and was part of
the press corps for the first United Nations meeting in San Francisco.
After a short stint in the motion picture business as an assistant cameraman, Carl spent
most of his professional career with Young & Rubicam Advertising Agency, NY (Y&R). He
started in 1958 as a Television Commercial Producer and later became Head of the
Production Department. He also served on the Board of Directors of Y&R. He finished his
long tenure as the first Director of the newly created Commercial Real Estate Department
managing and negotiating Y&R office leases worldwide.
Carl and Anne met in New York City for the first time on 76th and 3rd Ave, when he let him
into her apartment building because of the cold. Carl and Anne were fortunate enough to
travel the world together, including visits to the Vatican in Rome, the Pyramids of Gaza,
Israel, Europe, China, and Mexico. They enjoyed many European river boat and ocean
voyages including on Queen Elizabeth II. They most recently visited their favorite place, the
Adirondacks of New York State, to visit with their children and grandchildren and enjoy the
fall foliage.
