Louis John Goodman

Louis John Goodman of West Palm Beach, Florida died peacefully in his sleep on June 7. He was 89 years old. Born July 9, 1921 in Enfield, NH, he was the seventh of thirteen children of Anna and Benjamin Goodman. Louis Goodman devoted his life to his education and the education of others. He graduated Lebanon High School in 1939 as class Valedictorian, enlisted in the Marine Corp in 1943, was wounded in action in the Marshall Islands and was a decorated war veteran. He graduated MIT and Harvard with high honors and degrees in the field of Civil Engineering. Professor Goodman taught at both Ohio State and Lehigh Universities before coming to Syracuse University in 1954. During his tenure in Syracuse, Professor Goodman had an active consulting practice that specialized in sub-soil investigations. Professor Goodman left Syracuse for an assignment in the Philippine Islands as a Fulbright Professor where he founded the School of Engineering at Mindanao State University. In 1972 he was appointed Acting Director of the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, a position held for 11 years. In August 1976 Professor Goodman received an honorary PhD from Yeungnam University in Korea. Professor Goodman retired after 45 years of work in the area of Civil Engineering, having authored and co-authored over 70 research and technical articles in numerous national and international journals and conference proceedings. During his career, he lectured throughout Europe, South America and Africa (Cairo, Egypt). Louis Goodman is predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy Blomquist Goodman. He is survived by his wife Phyllis (West Palm Beach, FL), two sons Jack (Syracuse, NY) and Peter (Halifax, NS), a stepson Jim (Doylestown, PA), five grandchildren: Nicholas, Alexis, Jessica, Shannon, Rebecca, brothers Joseph (Nashua, NH) and Richard (Hampton, NH), sisters Lillian (Shrewsbury, MA) and Betty (Boynton Beach, FLA), and many nieces and nephews. Service with full military honors will be held on Friday, June 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth, Florida.
