Mary J. Fionda

March 2, 1922 — April 12, 2011

Age 89, of West Palm Beach, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, surrounded by her husband David and niece Diane Abbondante. Mrs. Fionda was born March 2,1922 in Boston Massachusetts to John and Bridget O’Shaughnessy. Mary married the love of her life, David in 1972 and they lived in New York until their retirement to West Palm Beach in 1980. Mary was the first woman to be promoted to Vice President of Chase Manhattan Bank worldwide where she worked for 38 years. After retiring to West Palm Beach she spent many years organizing the craft fairs at Holy Name of Jesus Parish. She was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan and loved to watch baseball and golf on Sunday afternoons. Mary loved to travel and would go to Ireland many times with her mom to visit the city of Limerick. She loved going on cruises with her husband and visiting the casinos to play the penny and nickel slot machines. Mary was a loving wife, aunt, cousin, godmother and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, David A. Fionda; niece Diane (Richard) Abbondante ; nieces, Lisa (Shan) Horzelski and Kristen(Josh) Abbondante; brothers-in-law, Ernest Fionda and Arthur Fionda; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Silver, Pearl Davis and Irene (Jim) Durbin; godson, Douglas Hampel and also Susan Leahy who was like a daughter to Mary. The family would like to especially thank the Bermudez family (Troy, Frank, Frank, Jr., Joey & Jennifer) for their love and support of our precious Mary. We would also like to thank her caregivers, Winnie Allen and the hospice team at JFK Medical Center. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, April 16th at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 345 South Military Trail, West Palm Beach with Reverend Gavin Badway celebrant. Due to the Catholic Holy Season of Lent, the family wishes that in lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church or have a Mass offered in Mary’s name.
