Raymond G. Slappey, age 85, died at his home in West Palm Beach on Saturday, July 28, 2012. He was born June 12, 1927, in Fort Myers, Florida, the son of Reuben Riley Slappey and Jennie Lind Booth Slappey. Through his mother’s family, he was a 6th generation Floridian, with his ancestors continuously living in Florida since 1791. Raymond graduated from Leon High School in Tallahassee, and served in the US Navy during WWII. He had lived in West Palm Beach since 1957. He worked in the insurance industry, retiring from the Reese Agency of Palm Beach in 1992. After retirement, he spent much of his time travelling internationally. Raymond had a heart for any animals in need. Raymond was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Williams Slappey, as well as by his parents Reuben and Jennie Slappey, and brothers Frank R. Slappey and Charles B. Slappey. Survivors include his sister, Agnes S. Hightower (and husband Earl) of Tallahassee, sister-in-law Mary H. Slappey of Tallahassee, and sister-in-law Jewell B. Slappey of Fresno, California. Additional survivors are niece Kay S. Schnitker (and husband Clay) of Madison, Florida, niece Ann S. Barrientos (and husband Ben) of San Jose, California, nephew Mark Slappey (and wife Susie) of Jacksonville, Florida, nephew Mike Slappey of California, great nieces Jennie Schnitker, Erin Slappey, Carli Slappey, and Jennifer Lopez, and great nephews Evan Schnitker and David Lopez. Graveside services with military honors will be held 10 am, Saturday, August 4, at Hillcrest Memorial Park in West Palm Beach. Tillman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
