Dessie Mae Luker Davis, a long-time resident of West Palm Beach, died peacefully Sunday, December 18, 2011, at UniHealth Post-Acute Care in Austell, Georgia at the age of 91. She was born August 21, 1920 in Clark County, Alabama to James K. Luker and Mamie M. Rivers Luker. She married Dovie Lee Davis on January 21, 1939 in Belzoni, Mississippi. Dessie worked in retail most of her life and retired from JCPenney in 1988. She loved to bake cookies and cakes for all her loved ones, and made numerous quilts for her family and friends as well. Some of her beloved quilts are making it to their next generation of use. Two of her most cherished accomplishments were obtaining her GED at the age of 60 and her membership to the Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dovie Davis, her son, Larry Davis; sisters Ruby Luker, Alma Phillips, and Ruth Drew; and brother Rayo Luker. She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Davis Schmitz of Smyrna, GA; daughter-in-law, Claire Davis of Lake Suzy, FL; and sister, Rachel Lofton, of Nederland, TX; along with grandchildren Jerry Schmitz (Lori), Carol Bass (Mike), Tim Schmitz (Ann), Sonya Burke (Bill), and Ty Newman; twelve great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The family of Dessie Davis wishes to thank all who work at UniHealth Post-Acute Care and Hospice for giving our mother, grandmother, sister, and friend such loving care. You are all truly angels here on earth. Funeral Services for Mrs. Davis will be 11:00 am Thursday, December 22, 2011 in the Chapel of Tillman Funeral Home, 2170 South Military Trail, West Palm Beach. Visitation for family and friends will be 10:00 am until service time. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Lake Worth.
