Caleb S. Allen

November 14, 1938 — February 25, 2013

Of Atlantis, FL, originally from Greenfield, MA, passed away peacefully at 74 years old on Monday, February 25. Cal entered Hospice care on Valentine’s Day with his wife and love of his life Nancy at his side. Cal and Nancy were married 56 years. Cal’s mother died when he was 6 years old and because of family circumstances he was raised by the Hoyt family “down the street.” A pivotal moment in his life, Cal received a scholarship from Deerfield Academy in western Massachusetts. Cal graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1956 and then UMASS Amherst 1961. When he graduated college he had alongside him a beautiful wife and three young sons. He worked very hard to support and care for his young family. During one 9-year stretch the family moved once a year as Cal worked his way up through the lighting industry. He spent his entire working career in the commercial lighting business, the last 20 years in southern California. He retired in 2006 as Vice President and National Sales Director for Bega Lighting located in Santa Barbara, CA. Cal leaves behind dear friends in the Detroit area, where his three sons grew up, and also in Santa Barbara where he and Nancy shared 20 great years. Cal is survived by his wife of 56 years Nancy Allen, his sons, Bo (and Erin) of Lake Worth, FL, Doug of Boynton Beach, FL, and Jonathan of Palm Springs, CA; two grandchildren, Jonathan Allen of Hypoluxo Island, FL and Sophie Allen of Palm Springs, CA. Cal always said that his time at Deerfield Academy was instrumental in forming the foundation for the rest of his life. He asked that upon his passing in lieu of flowers donations be made to a scholarship fund set up in his name to assist a deserving student(s) with college expenses. Donations can be sent to “The Cal Allen ‘56 Memorial Fund”, Old Main Street, Deerfield, MA 01342. (The town is so small there is no actual street address.)
