Luz Mercedes Fernando Abreu

Luz Mercedes Fernando Abreu was born October 6, 1952 in Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic to the loving parents of Efrian Rodriguez and her mother Eneroliza Abreu. As a child, she was very loving and obedient. As the oldest daughter, she was loving, caring, and responsible. As matter of fact she was considered by her siblings a second mother. She embraced her nickname “Mecho” while teaching her siblings right from wrong. In 1968 she met the love her life Wilson Jose Fernando. Soon after Wilson asked her to marry him and she proudly accepted. Shortly after they left Dominican Republic and migrated to Puerto Rico in 1970 due to Wilson’s work as a welder.
In Puerto Rico life began to take on new meaning when Mercedes conceived their first child Joanna in 1971, and then a year later gave birth to her second child Karen. Wilson, a very proud husband and father wanted more for his beautiful bride and daughters, so he set his sights on the US, and shortly thereafter moved to Louisiana in 1973, where they spent a short time before moving on to New York, where they resided from 1973-1978. During this time, Mercedes worked at a travel agency and soon after gave birth to her third child Jose on October 11, 1976. Wilson and Mercedes arrived at a thoughtful decision to raise their now expanded family in an environment more conducive to the standards they desired for their children, so they moved on to South Florida. West Palm Beach became home, she learned her embroidery skills and shortly thereafter gave birth to her baby boy Tony Fernando on November 7, 1985.
Soon they opened their own grocery store business and became successful entrepreneurs serving their community. Mercedes a loving mother, who placed her family first with care, love, and devotion.
As the loving Matriarch of her family she is responsible for bringing her siblings to America. Mercedes is preceded in death by her husband Wilson Jose Fernando, her brother Victor Abreu, her father Efrian Rodriguez and her mother Eneroliza Abreu. Survived by her children; Luz J. Johnson and husband Torrance Johnson, Karen J. Dean and husband Patrick A. Dean, Jose W. Fernando and wife Georgianna Fernando, and Tony L. Fernando. Sisters: Gladys Ravelo, Maria Dominguez, Fe María Abreu, Carmen Fabian and sister in law Francisca Abreu. Grandchildren: Brian Joshua Fernando and wife Melanie DeNiece Fernando, Jacqueline Phylicia Mitchell, Marie Ann Mitchell, Vianca Luz Campbell and Maquasia Campbell, LaShaun Quyones Fernando, Austin Conner Felter, Faith Victoria Dean, Kyle Blake Felter, Tatiana Marie Fernando, Matthew Juan Matta, Sabrina Nicole Matta, Mercedes Alexus Fernando, Tanijah Lora Johnson, Elana Marie Matta, Josiah Wilson Fernando, Jose Wilson Fernando Jr., Gianna Elizabeth Fernando, Great granddaughter Jessenia Marie Dieng, Great grandson Jeremiah Justin Fernando.
Luz Mercedes legacy of love and care will be greatly missed, but not forgotten. Her life will forever live on in the life of her family!
