Lya G. Dominguez-Moler

March 30, 1935 — June 3, 2017

Lya G. Dominguez-Moler, a longtime resident of Hialeah and Pembroke Pines, peacefully passed away on June 3, 2017 in Palm Beach Gardens with her two children at her bed side. The youngest of nine, she was born to Jesus Gutierrez and Efigenia Zarate on March 30, 1935 in Armero, Colombia. Despite losing her mother at a young age, she attended Colegio Americano Para Senoritas in Barranquilla and was awarded a scholarship to attend college in the US.  She would eventually attend Missouri Valley College and graduate Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology in 1956.  While living in Kansas City, Missouri she met her first husband, Manuel Dominguez Blanco, and they were married in Havana, Cuba in 1960.  Because of the political unrest in Cuba, later that same year, they moved to Miami and eventually settled in Hialeah.  At around that time Lya began working for Jackson Memorial Hospital as a medical technologist and would remain there for more than 35 years.  Lya and Manuel would have two children together, Maria Teresa Dominguez and Manuel Juan Dominguez.  Lya and her first husband would become estranged and Manuel Dominguez Blanco would eventually pass away in 1980.  In the early nineties, Lya met Lawrence Moler and they would later marry in 1993. Lya and Lawrence moved to Pembroke Pines and would reside there for almost 20 years. During that time, they became members of Faith Presbyterian Church and were actively involved with the church and community until they moved to Palm Beach County in 2012.  In 2016 Lawrence would also pass away.

Lya was a very energetic and active person.   Looking to improve herself and pursue new interests, Lya was always working on something -- bowling, scrabble, her faith; she was in constant motion.  A deeply religious person, she attended service every Sunday, volunteered, studied the bible, and actively worked on increasing her knowledge about Christianity. Lya also had a number of hobbies and personal pursuits.  Her first love was travel.  It was something she truly enjoyed.  It did not have to be far, whether it was Israel or Fort Myers, she loved it all. Toiling away in her garden was another of her great passions. The heat and dirt were no deterrent, she was constantly working on her garden, which included her beloved orchids.  She owned and cared for hundreds of these plants, during her life.

A huge sports fan, she was a vehement follower of her favorite teams -- the Kansas City Royals, Miami Heat, and Marlins.  She also loved watching soccer and the Olympics, these international competitions were her favorite.  Any Colombian accomplishments in these events brought her great joy, but she also cheered “USA” as loud as anyone.  She not only loved to watch sports, she loved to play them as well. She was an avid bowler, golfer and basketball player.  She was always willing to play a game of horse or head out to the lanes.

Lya’s passions went beyond sports, she loved board games and listening to music. She was always happy to play any board game, but none caught her attention more than scrabble.  Scrabble with Lya was “game on” – she was a shrewd strategist who optimized triple word scores, strived to use the 7 tiles in one word, and always kept the dictionary handy for word challenges.  If you never played scrabble with Lya, you really missed something special. Lya really enjoyed listening to music, whether it was Mozart or Carlos Vives she listened to all of it. Her CD player was always on.  Even towards the end of her life, when she could barely speak, she was still capable of belting out some opera or a few lines from the Sound of Music.

Lya always remained dedicated to her family.  Despite the distance from Colombia, she stayed in touch with her family through letters, long phone calls, visiting for long periods of time, or traveling with her sisters.  Long stays by relatives of her family were common in Hialeah, and in Colombia.   Lya was a single parent, never an easy feat, but made even more difficult by the times.   She was a great mother who was both stern and a loving provider.  It is fair to say she did a bang-up job, both her babies left the nest.  Both are gainfully employed.  Both built families and provided her with grandchildren. Lya is also survived by her grandchildren Samantha T. Dominguez, Katerina E. Dominguez, and Manuel F. Osaba.  A memorial service will take place on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at 2pm in Faith Presbyterian Church at 1700 NW 98th Avenue, Pembroke Pines, Florida.  Immediately following the service please join her family at Sergio’s restaurant on 13620 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines, Florida.  Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s association at alz.org or #endalz.  In the future, her family plans to travel to Armero, Colombia to spread her ashes along the ground from which she came.
