Karen Lee Whitfield Thomas passed away from this life on November 3, 2017.
Karen was born in Pasadena, TX to Thomas and Laverne Whitfield on May 23, 1956, and grew up there, graduating from Pasadena High School in 1974. Karen went on to Howard Payne University and graduated in 1978 with a degree in English and Education. She married her high school sweet heart, Keith, on December 18th, 1977. Other than her family, her passion was always teaching. She started her teaching career at an underprivileged school in St. Jo, Texas in 1980. Once she started having kids she dedicated herself to raising the four of them and stayed at home full time for many years. She would later return to teaching in 1995 and continued to teach on and off over the next 16 years until 2011 when Keith’s care in battling pancreatic cancer needed more full-time support. Karen and Keith were married for 35 years until Keith passed away on April 6, 2013.
Karen loved her children more than life itself, she loved the classroom, and she loved Texas. She never missed an opportunity to share a little bit about Texas history or to dote on her kids. She will be remembered for her immense love for the Lord and her love and kindness for others, even as she endured her own battle with cancer.
Karen is survived by her four children, Nathan, Nolan, Lauren, and Kelsey; Nathan’s wife Jordan, and their son Trace; her two sisters, Kay Whitfield Miller and Diane Whitfield Priest, and their families; her mother, Laverne Whitfield; her sister- and brother-in-love, Teresa Thomas Knight and Ronnie Thomas, and their families; and her mother-in-love, Doris Thomas. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Keith, her father, Thomas Wilson Whitfield, and her father-in-love, Herschel Allen Thomas.
Karen and Keith’s memories and legacies will live on through the thousands of lives they impacted over the years – through their children and family members, through countless friends, through students, and through church parishioners. She will be greatly missed.
A Memorial Service will be celebrated 10:00 AM, Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Family Church Downtown, 1101 S Flagler Drive, West Palm Beach, Florida.
The family asks in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the International Mission Board. Please visit www.imb.org to give.
